I love birthdays. I love twisting and hanging streamers. I love getting light headed after blowing up ten too many balloons. I love making cards, from myself, from animals. I love picking out gifts that will get a huge smile. I love themed wrapping and presentation. I love birthdays. And I LOVE when B's birthday rolls around. I always think I won't be one to spoil my future children, but if Byron's birthdays and celebrations are any indicator of how I might celebrate our kids, woof...we're looking at bankruptcy! Just kidding. It's not about how many dollars I throw at a celebration. I love the tiniest, smallest things that make a day special.
My fondest childhood memories are the themed birthday parties that my mom always planned for me -- an artist party, a 50's party, a bowling party, and my most favorite--a mini birthday party. American Girl had rolled out a line of mini things and dedicated one of their magazines to it, and I was obsessed. From the craft to the snacks to the invites to the favors--my mom was such a skilled party planner, and I always felt so incredibly special. This is something I want to carry on as tradition in our family.
As I have mentioned before, Byron loves opening gifts as soon as the day begins. He is a classic 'Christmas morning run-and-tear-and-open-and-throw-and-next' type of gift opener. Knowing this, I set his gifts out yesterday to ensure some time to celebrate the presentation before it was destroyed. But after a full night's sleep, he was ready to tear into them.
We woke up earlier than usual to celebrate...B had a simple man's breakfast, and then it was gift time! Theme: puppies and bikes, his old and new obsession. Byron loves all things dogs, and Sevenly had an appropriately themed fundraiser supporting Paws 4 Ability. They had their first one for this service dog organization last Christmas--perfect! I was hoping another one would roll around for this year, but it didn't. To my delight, a few months later, it was birthday time, and I scored B 2 adorable shirts to help provide service dogs to kids in need!
Byron recently picked up biking/cycling as a new passion, and I was happy to support it. I plopped myself on the floor of good ole Barnes & Noble to sort through the books and pick him out the most informative tips and manuals for his new venture. Information, first; activity, second. That's what I always say. Starting now. That same mantra is my reason for not having an exercise routine yet...I have yet to gather all pertinent information.
We don't normally spend much time together in the mornings apart from rushing to and fro, bedroom to bathroom, getting ready for the day, so it was nice to have more quality time together--a special birthday treat! I am excited to continue the celebration later today!
How do you like to celebrate? What is the best birthday you've ever had?
